Earthen Processes Residency, LAPA Project Space, Goethe-Institut Johannesburg, South Africa. 2024
A collaborative project between the artist’s Mina Nasr & Lamis Haggag.
During our residency program, we came together to focus on the effect of the sun on our culture, both mythological and social, initiating a conversation about the environmental relevance of solar cooking to our food traditions. We developed cooking practices using the sun, drawing from both Northern and Southern Africa to create a shared meal. Our aim was to revive traditional recipes and highlight crops and other local foods available in both North and South African countries. In the layering transparency menu, made from recycled paper pressed with seeds and vegetable leaves, we attempted to connect the north and the south of the continent through food practices. This menu was a collaboration with Joburg-based chef Mantis Shabane, featuring sun-dried and fermented hybrid recipes from Egypt and South Africa with contemporary twists.
